Serenity **** out of ***** (*** out of *****)

by on Nov.10, 2005, under Uncategorized

This is another movie, like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, where one’s opinion about the movie will depend on one’s familiarity with the source material – in this case, the failed Fox Television show Firefly.

Batman Begins ***** out of *****

by on Jun.30, 2005, under Uncategorized

If nothing else, Batman Begins does one thing right: It makes one forget that the last four movies were ever made. This movie is meant to “reset” the Batman motion picture franchise, and does so admirably.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith ****1/2 out of ***** [Spoilers!]

by on May.20, 2005, under Uncategorized

Well, it’s over (for now). After 28 years and 6 movies, the big screen adventures of the Skywalker clan have come to an end. Bittersweet, especially after the disappointments of Episodes I and II, but a mostly good end to one of our generations most influential piece of pop culture. Read on for my review/impressions of this film.

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – *** out of ***** **** out of *****

by on May.09, 2005, under Uncategorized

I apologize for the lateness of this review, but after I saw the movie, I felt that I needed to go back and read the first book to see if my first impressions held up.
Since I first heard it was being produced, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has been at the top of my personal Must-See list, with only Revenge of the Sith and possibly Batman Begins up there with it. This will be a mostly spoiler-free review, but if you’ve read the books, there is not going to be much to be spoiled anyway.

Stargate Atlantis **1/2 out of 5

by on Oct.08, 2004, under Uncategorized

[Ed. Note: Well, 3 months late it better than never, but I had to catch up on a few episodes before I made up my mind. The paragraph and a half were written right as the series premiered, and the rest was written in the last week.]
The SciFi Channel has introduced a spinoff of Stargate SG-1, the successful science fiction series that continues the story of the original Kurt Russel/James Spader movie. The set up for Stargate Atlantis, which premiered on Friday July 16th, 2004 can be likened to the relationship between Star Trek: TNG/DS9 and Star Trek Voyager, with the only difference being that the new Stargate Atlantis team knows going in they may never make it back to earth. The setup is ok, but if the producers aren’t careful the show can quickly degenerate into Stargate: Gilligan’s Island.

Spider-Man 2 ***** out of 5

by on Jul.01, 2004, under Uncategorized

There have been many, many movies based on comic books over the years, from The Mask to From Hell to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – the list goes on and on. However, I don’t think any of the directors of those movies “get it” like Sam Raimi does.

Bubba Ho-Tep ***** out of 5

by on Jun.15, 2004, under Uncategorized

With the recent release of the Bubba Ho-Tep DVD, I thought I’d republish the review I wrote on October 23rd when it was shown at the Indie Memphis Film Festival.
Bubba Ho-Tep ***** out of 5
An ancient Egyptian soul-sucker is on the loose at the Mud Creek Shady Rest home in east Texas, and only Elvis Presley and JFK can save the day. Unfortunately, Elvis broke his hip twenty years ago and has to use a walker, and JFK had part of his brain replaced with sand and his skin dyed black by the CIA. This sounds like a B-Movie plot (which it is) and you would expect Hollywood to ignore a movie like this completely (which it has), especially when Elvis is played by Bruce Campbell, star of the Evil Dead series of films. However, this is no B-Movie. Beyond the basic premise, this script has unexpected depth and compassion for its characters and continually suprises the viewers throughout the course of the film’s 92 minute running time.

LoTR: The Return of the King Review – ***** out of *****

by on May.24, 2004, under Uncategorized

Tolkein purists might rage and rail over what Peter Jackson has changed in this movie, but in the end, it doesn’t matter. This is a cinematic acheivement like no other.
Billy Boyd as Pippin really came into his own in this installment. As he sang to Denethor while Faramir marched the army of Gondor into its doom, you could hear his heart breaking. His conversation with Gandalf about death as the armies of Mordor are about to breach the final gate, managed to come off as an initimate moment even while carnage was taking place all around them – really a wonderful moment in the film.

Shrek 2 review – ***** out of *****

by on May.24, 2004, under Uncategorized

The first Shrek came out several years ago, and was an instant smash, and if this weekend’s box office numbers are any indication, Shrek 2 is following in the original’s footsteps.
