R.I.P. Michael Sheard, 1940-2005
by critter42 on Aug.31, 2005, under Uncategorized
Michael Sheard, aka Admiral Ozzel in Star Wars has passed away at age 65. I have put up a couple of pictures from various MidSouthCons, and more can be seen at my MidSouthCon23 picture blog at http://msc23pics.blogspot.com.

This is from a skit performed prior to the MSC 22 Masquerade. The person Michael is mugging for her bottle of hooch is author CJ Cherryh.

This one is from MSC 22′s closing ceremonies, just before he planted a big wet one right on our Toastmaster’s lips
.
We will miss you very much Mr. Sheard. The bright colors will be back after a suitable period.
Batman Begins ***** out of *****
by critter42 on Jun.30, 2005, under Uncategorized
If nothing else, Batman Begins does one thing right: It makes one forget that the last four movies were ever made. This movie is meant to “reset” the Batman motion picture franchise, and does so admirably.
Revenge of the Sith – $50 MILLION on opening day!
by critter42 on May.20, 2005, under Uncategorized
From The Hollywood Reporter, Revenge of the Sith shattered both the Opening Day record of $40.4 Million held by Spider-Man 2 and the overall 1-day total held by Shrek 2 at $44.8 Million.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith ****1/2 out of ***** [Spoilers!]
by critter42 on May.20, 2005, under Uncategorized
Well, it’s over (for now). After 28 years and 6 movies, the big screen adventures of the Skywalker clan have come to an end. Bittersweet, especially after the disappointments of Episodes I and II, but a mostly good end to one of our generations most influential piece of pop culture. Read on for my review/impressions of this film.
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – *** out of ***** **** out of *****
by critter42 on May.09, 2005, under Uncategorized
I apologize for the lateness of this review, but after I saw the movie, I felt that I needed to go back and read the first book to see if my first impressions held up.
Since I first heard it was being produced, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has been at the top of my personal Must-See list, with only Revenge of the Sith and possibly Batman Begins up there with it. This will be a mostly spoiler-free review, but if you’ve read the books, there is not going to be much to be spoiled anyway.

Stargate Atlantis **1/2 out of 5
by critter42 on Oct.08, 2004, under Uncategorized
[Ed. Note: Well, 3 months late it better than never, but I had to catch up on a few episodes before I made up my mind. The paragraph and a half were written right as the series premiered, and the rest was written in the last week.]
The SciFi Channel has introduced a spinoff of Stargate SG-1, the successful science fiction series that continues the story of the original Kurt Russel/James Spader movie. The set up for Stargate Atlantis, which premiered on Friday July 16th, 2004 can be likened to the relationship between Star Trek: TNG/DS9 and Star Trek Voyager, with the only difference being that the new Stargate Atlantis team knows going in they may never make it back to earth. The setup is ok, but if the producers aren’t careful the show can quickly degenerate into Stargate: Gilligan’s Island.
Archon 28
by critter42 on Oct.05, 2004, under Uncategorized
This is a real quick post to link to a quick and dirty picture gallery of some of the pics I took at Archon this past weekend. I didn’t get any stills of the Masquerade and didn’t get any pics or video of the last 5 or so entries (doggone batteries). I’ll post some screengrabs of the video I took along with a longer, more thoughtful review of the con once I’ve had some time to ruminate.
